Everyone says they are ugly, but the Geo Metro was an awesome car! It had a 3-cylinder engine and got around 55 miles to the gallon on gas. That's a half gallon of gas to make it 25 miles! Not many cars these days can make that claim. The little 1.0 liter sub-compact car was one of a kind when it was new and even though it was small it could keep up with the other cars of its time.
The Geo Metro was made in 1989 and stayed in production until 1997 when they joined the regular Chevrolet line-up of vehicles. It became available as a convertible in 1990, but that was ended after the 1993 model. The 3-cylinder engine was offered as either a 5 speed manual or 3 speed automatic transmission and the convertible version of the car was the first in the model to offer an airbag. It came in a two door, 4 door, or hatchback version and in several different colors.
One of the coolest things about this car is that even though it was small, you could comfortably sit 5 people in it. It looks small on the outside, but the inside was fairly roomy. I loved the easy to clean interior and how every single one had a great sounding stereo for the time it was made. Because of the size of the Geo's body in the early stages it only has the passenger side mirror because this mirror alone combined with the rear view mirror would allow you to see around the entire car.
When your little Geo broke down it was easy and affordable to get Geo Metro parts. Many of your local auto-part dealers had them stocked. If you didn't want to do the job yourself, the labor cost on these vehicles was next to nothing because they were small and easy to work with. Maintaining the Geo was one of the easiest things to do. It was suggested that you change the oil every 3000 miles, but about every 5000 miles was fine on the engine. It only needed a tune-up once every couple years and would go for miles and miles without giving you any trouble.
My grandmother bought her 1989 Geo Metro when it only had 2 miles on it. In 1999, I graduated high school and was given the Geo as a graduation present. It still purred like the day that she bought it. It is now 2010 and I still have my little red Geo Metro and I still love it. Over the 20 years this car has been in the family it has more than 250,000 miles on it and we have never had to do a single major repair! This car was a great investment and still 20 years later gets about 45 miles to the gallon on gas.
